As I was looking through our collection of glasses last week, I noticed many of our frames resembled eyeglasses from some of my favorite movies. This lead me to do a bit of research. I decided to write this short article outlining my top 10 favorite glasses-wearing characters today because.. well, I think it’s interesting. Not only do I like the style of the glasses, I like the movies too! These are my top 10, however, they’re in no particular order. So here goes…
1. Tom Ripley – The Talented Mr. Ripley
Great movie, strangely twisted..Super fun. What’s not to hate about Matt Damon’s character Tom Ripley, the extra creepy talented fraud? His glasses! The 1950′s vintage-inspired glasses he wore was the best thing about him!
2. Pola Debevoise – How to Marry a Millionaire
Three New York models who are tired of cheap men and a lack of money intend to use all their talents to trap and marry three millionaires. Marilyn Monroe is absolutely fabulous- Have to love her in this old school gold-digger flick. Plus her outfits/style inspired generation after generation. Take these sassy, cat-eye glasses for example. Talk about peacocking in the 50s. Thankfully what goes around comes around – her glasses would definitely meet 2015 fashion eyewear standards.
3. Harry Hart – Kingsman: The Secret Service
Just saw this movie recently and loved it. It was like a mix of Kick-Ass and James Bond…but better. My favorite scene definitely goes to the church battle with Colin Firth – insane. What I especially loved about this movie, being an eyeglasses fan, was the smart glasses the Kingsmen wore (I also like Samuel L. Jacksons clear “hipster” glasses). I really want a pair of those Kingsmen glasses. I wouldn’t mind that umbrella either, it’s been raining a lot here in Shanghai lately. This is probably my favorite on the list, to be honest.
4. Daniel Hillard – Mrs. Doubtfire
After a bitter divorce, an actor disguises himself as a female housekeeper to spend time with his children held in custody by his former wife. Ya, easy all-time classic. RIP Robin Williams. The glasses he wore as Mrs. Doubtfire must have been typical grandma glasses back in the 90s. Well, not anymore. This style has made a strong comeback and it’s even more popular with young adults. Big spacious eye rims are definitely in.
5. Clark Kent – Superman
RIP Christopher Reeve. This picture is from one of the best, if not the best, Superman movie. Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, and Christopher Reeve – That’s a true “Trioo”! The picture above says enough about his glasses – so memorable! A true 1970s style. I don’t think anyone will top Christopher Reeve’s Superman.
6. Laney Boggs – She’s All That.
Haven’t seen this movie in forever. Not the best movie at all, but still fun…and full of clichés. Like, only ugly girls wear glasses? Typical movie makeover – take off the glasses! I thought she looked good both ways. Anyways, the point is her glasses were fresh. I think the only real issue was her hair and clothes! But then again, She’s All That came out in the late 90s when wearing glasses wasn’t “sexy”.
7. Austin Powers – Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
Gotta love his glasses, gotta hate his teeth. The Austin Powers movies are definitely classics, and with that, so are his glasses. This is my favorite movie by Mike Myers. He really might have been the one to start the hipster craze. Dude had mad swag.
8. Velma – Scooby-Doo
This Velma made me reconsider the makeover cliché – She did a complete 180 from her cartoon version and didn’t need to take off the glasses to do it. She made glasses hot! She might have been the one that made the new nerdy so trendy. Probably not, but it’s not unfathomable. Or, maybe it was just Linda Cardellini. Who knows.
9. George Smiley – Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
A classic Cold War, thinking man’s spy thriller movie. A tad confusing but truly excellent in tone. Plus the glasses are a perfect representation of a glasses wearing spy in the 70s. Gary Oldman did a fantastic job in this one, it’s a must watch, and those glasses for Gary were a must to see.
10. Harry Potter – All the Harry Potter movies.
Harry Potter brought the John Lennon style back. I’m not sure if the role required the actor to have a face well suited for perfectly round thin glasses (these type of glasses look awful with my face shape), but Daniel Radcliffe sure did have the skinny face required to pull off these “Harry Potter” glasses. People my age (26) grew up right alongside Daniel by watching the Harry Potter movies – We never did like his glasses…Until now!
1. Malcolm X – Malcolm X
2. Lewis Skolnick – Revenge of the Nerds
3. Scotty Smalls – The Sandlot
4. Paul Shannon – Chain Reaction
That only covers a small fraction of cool glasses-wearing characters. Also, that doesn’t even touch on sunglasses! Here is a cool video of the top 10 shades-wearing characters from movies and tv.
